Culture of Life
With an almost daily attack
on life, from conception to natural death, the Diocese of
LaCrosse has established a pro-life network. Chris Ruff,
Director of the Office of Ministries and Social Concerns, has
written to every pastor asking to create a network with whom he
can communicate. He also wrote: “In the end, we need all
faithful Catholics to do their part in helping the world to know
and honor the dignity of the human person at every stage of
development. Please pray about what you can do.”

Selected Quotes
from Church Documents: On the Importance and Priority of
Defending Innocent Human Life
Papal
Teaching
Pope Benedict XVI:
God's love does not
differentiate between the newly conceived infant still in his or
her mother's womb and the child or young person, or the adult
and the elderly person. God does not distinguish between them
because he sees an impression of his own image and likeness (Gn
1:26) in each one.
Pope Benedict XVI, Address
to the Participants at the 12th General Assembly of the
Pontifical Academy for Life and Congress on "The Human Embryo in
the Pre-Implantation Phase" (February 27, 2006),

[L]ife is the first good
received from God and is fundamental to all others; to guarantee
the right to life for all and in an equal manner for all is the
duty upon which the future of humanity depends.
2 Pope Benedict XVI, Address
to the Participants in the General Assembly of the Pontifical
Academy for Life (February 24, 2007),

Pope John Paul
II:
It is impossible to further
the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to
life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals
are founded and from which they develop. A society lacks solid
foundations when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the
dignity of the person, justice and peace, but then, on the other
hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or tolerating a
variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated,
especially where it is weak or marginalized. Only respect for
life can be the foundation and guarantee of the most precious
and essential goods of society, such as democracy and peace.
Pope John Paul II,
Evangelium vitae (1995), no. 101
Vatican
Documents
The first right of the human
person is his life. He has other goods and some are more
precious, but this one is fundamental - the condition of all the
others. Hence it must be protected above all others. It does not
belong to society, nor does it belong to public authority in any
form to recognize this right for some and not for others: all
discrimination is evil, whether it be founded on race, sex,
color or religion. It is not recognition by another that
constitutes this right. This right is antecedent to its
recognition; it demands recognition and it is strictly unjust to
refuse it.
Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith, Declaration on Procured Abortion (1974),
no. 11
U.S. Bishops' Documents
At this particular time,
abortion has become the fundamental human rights issue for all
men and women of good will. .... For us abortion is of
overriding concern because it negates two of our most
fundamental moral imperatives: respect for innocent life, and
preferential concern for the weak and defenseless.
Resolution on
Abortion (1989)
Among important issues involving the
dignity of human life with which the Church is concerned,
abortion necessarily plays a central role. Abortion, the direct
killing of an innocent human being, is always gravely immoral
(The Gospel of Life, no. 57); its victims are the most
vulnerable and defenseless members of the human family. It is
imperative that those who are called to serve the least among us
give urgent attention and priority to this issue of justice.
Pro-Life Activities Fall, 2009
40 Days for Life
40 Days for Life uses a three-point program of
Prayer and Fasting (individual activity in your home), Prayer
Vigil (visible public prayer at three sites in La Crosse):
· Sept. 23 – Oct 6 Caledonia and St
Paul Streets
· Oct. 7 – 20 La Crosse and 4th Streets
· Oct. 21 – Nov. 1 South Avenue and
Green Bay Street
and Community Outreach (brochures, signs,
informational flyers, calling to enlist prayer warriors). All
of this is to pray to end abortion, raise awareness about the
evils of abortion, and increase respect for life. People from
the entire La Crosse and outlying areas are encouraged to
participate in one or more of the ways listed above.
Life
Chain
Life
Chain is a peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-life
Americans standing one hour praying for our nation and for an
end to abortion. It is a visual statement of solidarity by the
Christian community that abortion kills children and that the
Church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of
conception. People of all ages prayerfully witness along Losey
Blvd the 1st Sunday in October.
Winter, 2010
On Sunday, January 24, 2010 the Pro-Life
Committee showed Bella, which won the 2007 “People’s Choice
Award” at the Toronto International Film Festival. This film
tells the story of an unexpected encounter and friendship
between an ex-soccer player with a mysterious past and a
struggling waitress who recently discovered something that will
change her life. Eduardo Verįstegui, is a well-known actor from
Mexico. As he became more successful, he recognized his career
lacked significance and wanted instead to portray Latinos
positively. Based on a true story, this PG 13 rated film
emphasizes Latino and Christian values, such as the importance
of family, and inspires wholesome relationships.

or check out the DVD in the Parish Library which is in the
Father Bach Room.
Baby Bottle Collection For Birthright
In January, the Pro-Life
Committee also sponsored a collection which brought in $864 for
Birthright.
